So you'll be listening to a song, and Prince is shouting out to Los Angeles. One unintentionally Spinal Tap-ish moment running throughout One Nite Alone - it was recorded at various cities, and Prince does have a fondness of mentioning such cities during the mid-song instrumental vamps (which are plentiful, especially with the workouts given the Rainbow Children material). New Power Soul, Gold Experience, Rave, etc. I think Sunday is going to be a Prince kind of day - I am going to pop in some of his other discs that I tend to be on the fence on - e.g. Went straight to Best Buy and parted with my $50. With this instant change of heart I had with Crystal Ball, I realized that I really cannot write off or ignore anything that the Purple One does, which is what I had done with One Nite Alone. However, this time around I really connected with it - something about the grooves and monster basslines just locked in with each other, song after song. Now I am a huge Prince fan, but I really despised Crystal Ball, always thinking it was really bottom-of-the-barrel stuff, with the exception of a few tracks (e.g. You know what caused me to buy One Nite Alone all of sudden? I was out running some errands and popped in Crystal Ball. Good music to me is priceless to the point that I don't think about what I paid for it when it is playing, but still feel that this must be mentioned.Ĭlick to expand.Could be, that would make sense. The only sour note of "One Nite Alone" is the price- $47.99 for a 2 CD set with an after-hours jam 3rd disc is highway robbery, a total sham, especially when you see what Pearl Jam can do with the price for its "bootleg" series. The set really culminates with "Anna Stesia" - it is as great live as you would expect, and I imagine any Prince fan is going to get the chills listening to this one as soon as those opening piano chords hit. There is also a very long Prince-at-the-electric-piano medley comprising the heart of disc 2 that is enjoyable, although sometimes I wish the songs went on a chorus longer. The setlist is "Rainbow Children" heavy, but most of the absolutely crazy narrative and the silly dialogues of that album are gone, and what is left are a largely instrumental set of grooves that really smoke. definitely take this music to another level. And what a band this is - Larry Graham, Maceo Parker, Candy Dulfer, etc. Pretty much straight to DAT, the Prince album sounds very natural, present, and warm, with the right feel and mix of music and crowd.

Let me be clear - the sound quality issues were unfounded or were the product of listeners accustomed to the overly produced and studio patch-jobs that are the modern live album. However, I got into a Prince mood in the last couple of days, wandered over to Best Buy, and finally picked it up. I was originally scared by the rumors of sub-bootleg sound quality of Prince's first ever live album "One Nite Alone.Live!", as well as the fact it is was another NPG-distribution (ala the Crystal Ball fiasco), so I took a pass.
